If you have been reading this blog, you might have noticed that my author bio has no picture of me.
Readers always like to know what the author of a post looks like, as it helps give them that personal connection with you, the author. In the online blogging world, anything that gives you a personal connection is good.
There are a couple of ways to add an image of yourself to your author bio and to your comments. The first is to use a plugin such as “User Image” but an even easier method is to set up an account at Gravatar.com and register your email address there with a Gravatar Image.
Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” and is a wonderful tool for you and your blog.
Before I explain how to get a Gravatar, let me explain why you should.
Why You Need a Gravatar
First, if you have multiple blogs like I do, you can quickly add an image to all of your blogs from one central location, and furthermore, if you ever want to change all your images from one central location, you can do that as well.
Second, if you comment on other blogs (and you should do this a lot if you wan to grow your readership), most blogs today now recognize Gravatar images. So when you type a comment on a blog, an image of yourself will also get posted there, if you have a Gravatar account.
Third, as I mentioned above, an image gives you a personal connection with your readers that you do not want to pass up. It also allows the WordPress Jetpack to use Gravatar Hovercards. This is a nice feature of the Jetpack, but it only works if you are using your Gravatar image. I have added all my websites to my Gravatar account so that when you hover your mouse over my Gravatar Image (try it in the first comment below), you can see a little bit about me and links to my sites.
Fourth, your image is part of your “brand” whether you realize it or not. So whatever you do online should help you build the brand of “you.” If you have a company or a logo, you could use an image which represents that company or logo, but again, a face is usually best for that personal connection. A Gravatar image really helps with your personal branding efforts.
Fifth, it FREE. So why not?
How to Get a Gravatar
So, here is how to get a Gravatar.
First, go to Gravatar.com and create an account. It’s free, so don’t worry about them trying to sell you anything. Remember, here at Grace Blogger, aside from hosting and our Premium Theme, we believe that blogging should be free–just like grace.
I already have an account here for my other blogs, so rather than create an account, I am going to sign in.
When I do, I am greeted by a screen showing my registered email accounts and the page where I can add a new email address if I want.
To add an email address, just click the blue link.
When you enter an email, it will send a confirmation email to your mailbox. Go click the link in that email, and it will return you here to add an image to your Gravatar.
Again, I already have an image I apply universally to all my blogs and comments, but I will be changing this in the near future, and will simply make that change here.
When you email is confirmed and your image is added, just click on the blue “G” to change the Gravatar image for that email, and then select from the bottom which image you want associated with that email address.
You are all done adding a Gravatar!
Here is my “after” image with the new picture added to Grace Blogger.
Now, if this is your first time in Gravatar, you should probably add some personal information, social networking links, and any other websites you think are important to show off on your Gravatar Hovercard.
I added three social networking sites:
And I added my blogs:
