Even if you don’t use the Standard Theme, you can add the +1 button anywhere by using a WordPress Plugin. Just search the plugins for Google Plus One.
Here is how to manually add it to the Sharer bar within Standard Theme.
Add script to header.php
The first step is to add the a Google script to your header.php file.
From your dashboard, click on Appearance, and select Editor.
From the list of files on the right, choose “header.php.” You are going to insert the script right before the closing </head> tag.
Here is the code for the Google script to insert:
Make sure you save the file before moving on!
Add Sharer to standardtheme.php
Now that you have added the script to your header, let’s insert the code for the Google +1 Button.
You are still in the Theme editing screen, and so scroll down to a file on the right called standardtheme.php. We are going to add a bit of code to this file.
You can choose where exactly you want this code to be placed by noticing the code sections and placing the Google code accordingly. Each section begins with an “php if” statement, and ends with a “php endif” statement.
I place mine after the Facebook Share button, and before the AddThis sharer button.
Notice that there are two snippets of code above. This is because while I am in here, I also wanted to add some code for Stumble Upon. I like this site as it occasionally gives me some fairly good traffic. But you don’t have to add this piece of code if you don’t want to.
Here is the code to insert these two buttons.
Stumble Upon Code
Google +1 Code
Google +1 Button Appearance
After I have added the two snippets of code, and saved the file, I go back out to see what it looks like.
Not bad at all! If you agree, do me a favor and +1 this post! Thanks!
